Self-facsia release workshop series

Jana Castillo

Tipperary, Galway, Dublin, Belfast

In 2024, Luail hosted this workshop series by Jana Castillo, focussing on ‘self fascia-release’ a process designed to equip dancers with an easy-to-learn technique to enhance and support their movement practice.

Fascia, a continuous structure throughout the body, plays a crucial role in movement and can become restricted due to injury, stress, trauma or the everyday challenges of modern life. Jana’s approach facilitates the release of tightened fascia, promoting increased malleability and greater resilience—essential for dancers navigating physical challenges.

Hailed as a Dancer to Watch by Dance Australia magazine, Jana brings a wealth of experience from her career spanning dance, choreography, motion capture and massage therapy. Most recently, the artist performed her solo show Castillo at the prestigious Théâtre National de Chaillot, Paris, in January 2024.

Jana’s journey began in Wodonga, Victoria, where she nurtured her passion for dance before earning a scholarship to the Victorian College of Arts Secondary School and later studying at the New Zealand School of Dance. From 2010 to 2016, she toured globally with esteemed companies like Okareka (NZ) and Shaun Parker and Company (AUS), gracing prestigious venues such as London’s Sadler’s Wells Theatre and New York’s The Joyce Theatre.

Joining Australian Dance Theatre (ADT) in 2017 marked a pivotal moment in Jana’s career, where she garnered acclaim for her roles in productions like construct by Tanja Liedtke and The Beginning of Nature by Garry Stewart, culminating in the Australian Dance Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Dancer in 2018.

Beyond her performance accolades, Jana has contributed significantly to the screen industry across feature films, commercials and short films – perhaps most notably in her stunt motion-capture acting for the iconic Weta Digital in New Zealand. Here, she provided movement design for key characters in feature films Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

Her work extends to disability advocacy and neurodivergent representation within the arts community, as explored in the SBS documentary Perspective Shift: Jana which sheds light on her journey as a contemporary dancer who happens to live with generalised dystonia and autism.
